More on snakes and your Summer…

Apparently there are a lot of people out there trying to find a good picture of a Northern Water Snake. I wrote a post a week or so ago about this snake in particular, along with an image.
I’m adding another, longer image of this snake hoping to assist with identification anyone is trying to make. And another image of this snake out of the water:

Northern Water Snake, Non-Poisonous

Just FYI – although a “water” snake, this one will take an opportunity now and again to find a sunny spot on dry land. This picture was taken of it curled up about 3 feet from the lake’s edge, surrounded by water mint and just under an old sink I use as a planter. Very hard to see until it moves. When startled – it did head back to the water which is good news since this location is about 2 feet from my back deck.
Since we added the rip-rap (large rocks) around the lake’s edge last year, I’ve noticed this snake a lot more often particularly where the rip-rap is located. We expected as much since rocks draw heat and snakes love to sunbathe and sleep against them. If you’re walking in an area of rocks – say along a river’s edge, please keep this in mind…
For more on US snakes, I recommend a great online site with a LOT of info and images of snakes in different areas of the United States. Start your US snake research at “Snakes of North America” and have a safe Summer…
