A New Neighbor

by on Aug.25, 2010, under Images, Real Estate

Every once and awhile something new shows up in the pasture next door.

Sometimes it is a fox or a beaver. Sometimes 6 bulls become 12 cows. Sometimes deer meander through on their way to the 180 forested acres behind the pasture. Yesterday – another new arrival…

New calf

He (or she) is about the size of my dog CoCo right now which is around 70 pounds. I don’t think this will last long. These cows grow incredibly fast so I am enjoying the look of the “baby” while I can.

Add a little bit of black and I would have to think this calf is a Raiders fan!

A fantastic electric lawnmower

by on Aug.18, 2010, under Favorites

Black & Decker Electric 18

After 7 years of hard use – including a LOT of mulching, it is time to retire my current electric lawnmower.

The good news is, I’m buying the same model again – this Black & Decker 18″ Electric Lawnmower.

I’ve considered other brands and models, and have considered battery-powered options as well. But, there is no use messing with success. I have the power cords I need to reach 95% of my yard and this little mower does a quiet and excellent job of keeping things neat and trimmed.

Anyone looking for a solid and relatively quiet way to manage their lawn mowing task may want to give this machine a good look.

Cold, fresh water for your big dog…

by on Aug.18, 2010, under Favorites

Anytime he or she needs it. Don’t leave stagnant, stale water for your best friend!

The Big Dog Pet Drinking Fountain uses a free-falling stream of water that aerates the water with oxygen, and since its charcoal filter also removes bad tastes and odors, your pet will have a more appealing way to stay hydrated.

UK Villages – Losing the Battle?

by on Aug.18, 2010, under Real Estate

I can’t imagine England without its villages. Anyone who has watched even one Midsomer Murders will quickly see that village life in England, outside the fictional murders of course, is definitely worth saving.

Unfortunately, those who grew up in villages are now faced with not being able to afford to live there as adults. And with numbers like these, you can see why:

Throughout the South East region the average house price is around £267,573, more than 12 times the average wage.

In rural areas that gap becomes even worse, with the average home costing over 14 times local incomes. In rural parts of the South East region, there are 49,892 households waiting for an affordable home.

Possibly adding to this problem is the number of expensive second or holiday homes in English villages. From my own rural environment in the US I can see where this leads to often empty homes, city income able to afford the village’s best – for a long weekend or so, and little real benefit to the village itself for the long-term.

It sounds from the article, that at least someone is paying attention to this problem. I hope they are successful.
