The Aran “jumper” is a style of jumper/sweater that takes its name from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. It is sometimes known as a fisherman’s jumper. A classical fisherman’s jumper is a bulky garment with prominent cable patterns on the chest, often cream-colored – the traditional white or off-white báinín.

The jumpers are distinguished by their use of complex textured stitch patterns, several of which are combined in the creation of a single garment. The word choice of “jumper” or “sweater” (or indeed other options such as “pullover” and “jersey”) is largely determined by the regional version of English being spoken. In the case of Ireland and Britain, “jumper” is the standard word with “sweater” mainly found in tourist shops. The word used in Irish is geansaí, a gaelicization of guernsey which has been re-Anglicised to gansey in Hiberno-English, and as we know them, our good old warm and cozy “sweater” in the US!

Originally the jumpers were knitted using unscoured wool that retained its natural oils (lanolin) which made the garments water-resistant and meant they remained wearable even when wet. It was primarily the wives of island fishermen who knitted the jumpers.

I’ve ordered two Aran sweaters from Shop Irish and I have my eye on a third for this coming Fall 2012…Great products and a great vendor – just FYI.

Well, I’ve had about 1 day so far since the first day of Spring on Tuesday, that it didn’t feel like mid-summer instead. I’ve already pulled a tiny tick from its biting location, have seen a snake or two around the property, and have closed windows and turned on the A/C to combat heavy pollen.

Time to check my Neem supply for 2012…

There is a Botanical Outdoor Spray. You’ll want a bottle of this on hand if you plan to do any walking, hiking, working in weeded areas, in fact, for almost anything you do that puts you in or around tall grass. If you don’t use one of these products beforehand, chiggers WILL find you.

If you prefer, there is also a gel product – same effectiveness.

If you get chiggers – sometimes they come out earlier than anyone can predict, apply the Neem gel or spray – immediately! It may take a day or two, but it will kill the chiggers and keep them from spreading everywhere.

I posted a product article and link on this in May 2011 so things are happening earlier this year due to the warmer-than-usual temperatures. This year I’m posting in March. In June and July last year, many people were out looking for a product to repel chiggers – too late for most unfortunately.

Sweltering heat might be the phrase best applied to Summer 2011. It’s mid-July now and many areas have already spent a month or more in normal July-August temperatures. I’m not looking forward to the next month+ of heat so it’s time to seek relief.

Here are a few of the latest outdoor cooling products including fans, collars, and hats – and a link to a photo of my neighbor enjoying the misting fan I bought for him! I’m not sure how either of us got along without it!

The Hoseless Evaporative Cooling Fan makes a patio or deck as comfortable as an air-conditioned room without being tethered to a garden hose. Encountered in luxury resorts and outdoor cafes, the fan reduces the air temperature by as much as 30\u00BA F by gently misting the surrounding area.

Six patented nozzles create micro-fine droplets that feel dry to the touch and evaporate almost instantly, providing refreshing cooling without the soaking spray common with lesser misting fans. An eight-gallon reservoir holds enough water for up to eight hours of continuous misting; the density of mist adjusts with a simple turn of a dial. The 30″ fan’s high-velocity three-speed motor is waterproof and can oscillate 50\u00BA, cooling up to a 1000′ sq. area. Because flying insects typically avoid wind and moisture, the fan also helps reduce these outdoor nuisances.

The patented fibers in this Evaporative Cooling Cap use evaporation to draw heat away in warm weather, keeping your head up to 30º cooler than outside air temperature. The hat is charged by running it under cool water, then wringing out the excess.
