++ Bob Hope $34 Million Palm Springs Estate for Sale

Bob Hope's Palm Springs home

It seems the estate/family put the property on the insiders/pocket listing market a year ago for $50 million. No takers.

And it’s Super Bowl Weekend. Here’s a little slideshow for you of some unbelievable homes owned by professional athletes. The list is from 2012 but who cares? Still fun to look!

++ Most Expensive Athlete Homes

There are real estate web sites that cater specifically to those who have big chunks of cash to spend. Here’s one I found that has a very nice little “cottage” in the US Virgin Islands. Price? $13 million.

++ Antigen Realty

The sad news is that for many of these professional sports stars, money comes in too fast with players unprepared to manage it. I imagine if someone just dropped some half million dollar retainer of sorts in MY bank account, the immediate thrill of spending some of it would be hard to resist.

++ Vince Young joins many ex-NFL players who see bankruptcy

For others, having so much disposable income gets to be taken for granted real fast. While I’m keeping track of my minuscule income and expenses each month, some of these players find themselves a couple years in to their financial windfall owing hundreds of thousands per month on various lavish homes and cars. Have an injury or get dropped from your contract?

Ruh-roh!!!!

“A 2009 Sports Illustrated study found that 78 percent of former NFL players went bankrupt or were suffering from severe financial stress within two years of retiring. Former NBA players didn’t fare much better, with 60 percent of them going broke within five years of retirement.

So anyone out there with some really stellar athletic skills who is contemplating a career in professional sports might want to take a few quick courses in math, accounting and real estate and the basic meaning of “incoming” and “outgoing” – things the rest of us are already “professionals” at managing.
