Real Estate: What Will $1 Million Get You?

by on Oct.03, 2013, under Real Estate

I did a post a couple of weeks ago titled “Real Estate: What Will $2 Million Get You?” This week we’re heading down the property food chain a bit to see what a measly million dollars can do – and contrast based again on “where.”

We’re somewhat spoiled in most parts of the US. Our homes are larger and in many cases tend to be on larger lots or acreage. I was watching a HGTV House Hunters International, (Yes, I am addicted!) featuring the Netherlands. Let’s see what $1 million US will get us there…

Netherlands property - Exterior

This beautiful property is located on a canal. I love being on the water so this is a good start!

Netherland's property - Canal

This detached villa has a garage and two parking spaces.

It also has very unique views towards Leiden and Koudekerk on the Rhine, a convenient location relative to the (historic) center of Leiden.

It is a 1830 square foot 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with its own mooring slip! To the best of my calculations – this house is on approximately .12 acre.

Ground floor: Entrance hall with toilet, open hardwood stairs to the second floor. Access to spacious L-shaped living room with fireplace, tiled floor with underfloor heating and a view of the Old Rhine. Also spacious L-shaped kitchen with four-burner gas cooker, fridge, freezer and oven/microwave. Utility room with plumbing for washing machine and dryer.

Master bedroom

From the kitchen head out to the backyard with spacious patio, boat dock and attached garage. First floor also has a spacious master bedroom with door to balcony facing west second bedroom with door to the roof terrace with beautiful canal views. Attic: The attic is accessible through a stairs from the landing. The loft offers a large space for storage of goods.

This property comes in at $982,592.US (plus change.) View more property details here.

I certainly wouldn’t mind being within a quick bike ride to Leiden, but for $1 million I think most prospective US buyers would be dismayed by the small master bedroom (I saw no closets) and the very small though very scenic lot.

My money is still burning a hole in my pocket so next I am reviewing a property in Connecticut.

I chose Connecticut not only because the state has some extraordinary real estate, but also because it is one of the most costly states in the states in which to live. Let’s see what we can find…and leave it to me to find water!

Connecticut property - waterfront

This 3,000 square foot 4 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath home sits on a bit over 2 acres fronting Lake Zoar.

Upon further inspection, this is a spec house for what can be built in this gated community so most everything in it will be of your choosing and all BRAND NEW!

The home will have 10 rooms and will also include a full walk-out basement. You can see from the Master bathroom pictured that this home will have open-plan living and luxury amenities.

Connecticut - Master Bath

Oxford, located in western New Haven County, is definitely a great location for those who like to get out and MOVE!

Paugusett State Forest is nearby for hiking the Berkshires. Out your back door – Lake Zoar is stocked yearly with fish by the kindly souls at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.

More Connecticut property details – and images! This outstanding waterfront property is offered at $998,900 US.

This will be a tough choice on what to do with my million. Many things need to be considered – depending on where I really want or need to be. It’s nice to take a fantasy walk through million-dollar properties though – no matter where they are…

One way or another, I’m going to need a boat!

Carolina Blue & Leaf Peeping

by on Oct.02, 2013, under Images

Some days you are just happy that the grass needs to be cut so you have a productive reason for being outside…

Fall sky and leaves - North Carolina

Brilliant and clear blue sky with just a little puff of cloud for contrast – and trees that are (based on the dead leaf ground cover) beginning to change color and fall FAST this season…I don’t care, I love to rake!

Hope everyone else is enjoying this first week of October 2013!
