Ye Old Christmas Cactus

If you’re looking for a plant to give at Christmas and are dazzled by the array of Poinsettias at local stores, look past them instead for the smaller and less showy Christmas Cactus.
Some may have luck getting Poinsettias to “show me something” other than the first year. I have not. But this little Christmas Cactus that gets almost NO attention from me throughout the year, always pops 5 to 10 blooms between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It has done so for the past 6 years.
Cactus are great for an inexpensive but thoughtful gift. I have found that putting the plant outside during the late September to November time frame and upping its water intake, seems to increase the blooms come December. That’s about all this plants asks for.
And since it blooms just once a year, I always like the anticipation of the bloom event since by a year’s time, I have forgotten what color the flowers will be! Gives the kid in me something else to look forward to!
