Cheap and reliable cell phones for rural locations

I always hesitate to use the word “cheap” in describing a product.
For many, “cheap” does not mean good – but this has been the opposite with TracFone.
I gave up on more expensive and contract phone service almost as soon as I moved outside a major city area. Fortunately, I was nearing the end of a phone-slave contract at the time since the service was buggy at best at my new location.
I bought a Tracfone and a year’s worth of minutes, and this has been a no-worries, no stress transaction ever since. I buy minutes, I use minutes, and I always know how many I have left and if and when they expire.
Service has been better and more consistent than the more highly advertised (and costly, and contract) service I had prior. There is no “contract” with Tracfone and they also offer a fairly decent range of phones to choose from – depending on your usage and needs. A couple examples are below:
