Not confirmed as yet, but I think this is a Northern Water Snake. I am sure about the “snake” part.

Yeah I live in Illinois right outside of St louis, and we have many snakes that look identical to this one swimming in our lake out back. I was assuming it was a northern water snake as well.

I checked with the NC Natural Resources people to be sure the thing wasn’t poisonous. Have a great Summer!
