I placed an online order for steamed hard crabs a week or so ago and promised to post a review. Before the fond memories get away from me – here it is.

Before going further I should mention that I was born and raised in Maryland and have spent a lifetime experiencing “Hard Crab Summers.” I know how crabs are to be steamed, have steamed them myself – and can tell when they are not cooked properly.

Rest assured – The Crab Place “steamers” know what they’re doing.

I expected – based on the crab size I ordered – to get around 3 dozen crabs. Final tally for this order was 38 crabs. I expected them to be properly cooked and seasoned – without too much salt. They were.

If crabs are cooked for the right amount of time, claw meat releases cleanly from the crab claws once broken – you don’t have to scrape it out and it doesn’t adhere to the shell. You also shouldn’t spend the next 24 hours after eating crabs craving water. No scraping of claws was required and the crabs were seasoned properly without excessive salt. You just can’t beat Old Bay seasoning!

I added the pound container of lump crab meat to my order and was extremely pleased with that as well. It is nearly impossible to pick crab meat without leaving a few shell fragments behind but this pound of crab meat had almost no shells to speak of. I was able to make 8 fairly large crab cakes from this part of the order – which are now resting comfortably in my freezer.

The crabs were packaged and shipped properly – cold on arrival but not wet – and arrived on the day as scheduled.

I’m already plotting my next order and with a birthday coming up soon – it may involve lobster. It won’t involve any company other than The Crab Place.
