Rose Cottage Version of a “Follower”

by on Apr.17, 2012, under Images, Real Estate

I throw fish food most evenings and over the course of a few seasons, a local Heron has figured out this might be a good time for him (or her) to catch a evening meal.

Heron - North Carolina lake

I’ve noticed since even last year that this bird is getting more bold about “following” me – or rather the path the fish food is taking – which in turn helps him identify where his (or her) next meal is coming from.

The lake has an overabundance of Bluegill – this Heron’s particular favorite, and the lake’s water is still too low heading into Summer 2012 so, having a Heron drop by to grab a fish or two – while not pleasant for the captured fish, is part of the natural order of things on the lake.

Drought – New Fishing Opportunities

by on Aug.03, 2011, under Images, Real Estate

Well, at least for this heron:

Heron on lake

Where he is walking, the water level would normally be about 1/3rd the way up his neck. Even with his “eagle-eye” he would have a bit of trouble spotting potential meals. With the 2011 drought in full throttle, many new fishing spots have opened for this heron and he has been staying on the lake nearly 24/7 – unusual.

Fortunately there are deep channels at the far end of the lake and the fountain is (hopefully) providing enough aeration to keep the fish from dying. But we could really use some rain…about 10″ or so…just to catch up.

Until then, I’m never sure where this visitor may be found:
