Did you know you can register your own backyard as a Wildlife Garden?
All you need to do is document your status in the following areas:
– Food Sources – For example: Native plants, seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, nectar
– Water Sources – For example: Birdbath, pond, water garden, stream
– Places for Cover – For example: Thicket, rockpile, birdhouse
– Places to Raise Young – For example: Dense shrubs, vegetation, nesting box, pond
– Sustainable Gardening – For example: Mulch, compost, rain garden, chemical-free fertilizer
The NWF – National Wildlife Federation, has a program which will allow you to certify your area as a “Wildlife Habitat.” Let people know you take care of your little piece of the planet – and expect them to do the same while there. This is a great program – help spread the word that open spaces are worth saving – one backyard at a time…
