A little shaky excitement today!
by admin on Aug.23, 2011, under Real Estate
I was minding my own business around 2pm this afternoon when the ground began to shake! It was pretty obvious it was an earthquake. Very strange for earthquake activity in North Carolina to happen – even if just a tremor from what did occur in Virginia. No one (except the geese), seemed to pay much notice…they decided to wing it to the lake – the same thing they do when a noisy plane or helicopter goes over a bit lower than it probably should. Glad to read that there is little damage or injuries from this afternoon’s wake-up call.
Now to wait out the week and see what Irene has in store – if anything. The media will be into “strengthening” and “weakening” news right up until Irene either does something or, turns and heads out to sea. We are desperate for rain in the Piedmont area of North Carolina – but several days of no electricity would not be welcomed.
And so it goes…
Fears about pond and lake water…
by admin on Aug.22, 2011, under Real Estate
I got a rather excited call from my Mom last week regarding amoebic meningoencephalitis.
Well, she actually started by telling me to make sure I don’t fall into my lake and breathe any water through my nose. I was a bit surprised by this warning since, although I’ve pushed my luck more than once, I have yet to fall from the boat in an unplanned manner.
But once I did some research I saw why she was concerned:
CDC to test Virginia waterways for deadly amoeba.
Apparently this amoeba is around all the time but its activity is enhanced by warm, stagnant lake and pond water. Due to the drought in many areas this year, conditions must be prime, and several people have died.
If water carrying the amoeba enters the body through the nose, the organism travels to the brain where it attaches itself and begins to destroy brain tissue. This is scary stuff by this fact alone. Add to it that anyone contracting this amoeba has only a 3% chance to survive it and the news for anyone infected is not good.
After learning this, I hope people will use the appropriate caution, but not panic.
Read more about amoebic meningoencephalitis.
Knowledge is power only if it doesn’t become a paralyzing factor.
And the sign said…

The Irish have an abundance of humorous and pithy sayings – most of which bring to mind, “I wish I’d said that!”
Here are a few I found recently – I’ll let them speak for themselves…

Garden Benches – What’s Your Style?
by admin on Aug.18, 2011, under Favorites, Quick Deals!
If I had been blindfolded and placed on a garden bench in summers long past I could tell you which Grandmother I was visiting – just by the nature of the garden bench.
My Mother’s Mother would have nothing in the yard to sit on that was not made of wood. This may have been because my Mother’s Father was an expert woodworker and wood carver.
Perhaps she would have selected the Lutyens Eucalyptus English Garden Bench – which even comes in your choice of three colors.
Practical and simple style that would have coordinated perfectly with everything else in her garden.
On the other hand, my Father’s Mother would have preferred this Grape Vine Vintage-Style Garden Bench.
She wouldn’t have cared that it was powder-coated aluminum. Every piece of outdoor seating in her yard was ornate and mostly, wrought iron. Not as practical or simple as the bench above, but in tune with the more formal design of this grandmother’s yard and garden.
In an effort at full disclosure I should probably tell you that one of my sisters, who was about 3 years old at the time, did manage to get her arm firmly caught in the scroll work of one of my grandmother’s wrought iron chairs. While my father thought this was a good, if temporary way to keep track of one of six children, my mother eventually freed my sister from the chair.

A Time-Saver – Roku
by admin on Aug.16, 2011, under Favorites
I recently got rid of my satellite television dish and service. I’m saving around $92 per month for doing so with little loss of anything really vital.
Most of what I do watch on TV is available online but I did notice an immediate problem – it takes too long to find something to watch. If I’m getting ready to sit down to lunch or dinner and want to watch something while eating, I could sit there and have my food get cold (or warm) while I wade through the web sites to find an episode link.
Then I found Roku…
The Roku player is like having your own video library at home with over 100,000 choices – from the best movies, TV shows to sports. The Roku player is the easiest way to watch anything and everything from Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, MLB.com, Pandora and more instantly on your TV.
Sort of an electronic TV guide for the streaming world. This is what I needed!
3 models to choose from based on what you like to watch or listen to – and all relatively inexpensive. Roku also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Check it out for yourself…

Moth “attached” to Styrofoam…

Took a snap of this moth to identify later, but also noticed how weird Styrofoam looks up close and personal…Yes, I am sometimes easily entertained! Especially on Fridays!

Drought – 2011
by admin on Aug.12, 2011, under Images, Real Estate
It’s here and it’s ugly:

This dock now looks a bit ridiculous since it is surrounded by no water. In fact, the dock spent nearly two months UNDER water in 2006. For a 4-acre lake to have lost this much of its substance says a lot about how dry things are – everywhere really – but specifically in my Piedmont North Carolina location.
Local farmers are having to arrange water deliveries to manage their livestock – shallow ponds and streams are dry. I usually enjoy a trip to my local Southern States but lately, it is a rather depressing visit since everyone is experiencing increasing difficulties.
99% of the local area is on well water. Wells, particularly more shallow wells, are also a concern during a drought. Some thoughts on well water were mentioned in this prior post.
If anyone, anywhere, doesn’t think that having enough water is important, and that having enough clean water is vital – you just aren’t paying attention….
Fortunately, the Southern Environmental Law Center IS paying attention.
TGIF – and still praying for rain…
