Spring – Squirrel Festival

by on Mar.18, 2011, under Quick Deals!, Real Estate

At least that’s what it seems like sometimes.

As soon as the first few warm days show up, so do the squirrels. As soon as the first bulbs start to peek out of the soil, so do the little tunnels built to grab any that haven’t broken ground as yet. And if you’ve seen them chasing up and down trees, you’ll know why humans use the term “squirrely” to denote weird or spastic behavior.

Although I have a bird feeder squirrel baffle on my main bird feeder, I’m looking for some additional options for the 2011 Summer season…

The Squirrel Proof Bouncer

The Squirrel Proof Bouncer

Simple & Effective, the Bouncer has a design that keeps squirrels, grackles, jays and starlings out of your seed supply.

The four counter-weighted perches will support all of the smaller songbirds and even most cardinals but the weight of squirrels and larger birds will cause the perch to collapse to an inaccessible position underneath the feeder.

Fully assembled and easy to fill, this Hanging Feeder holds 9 lbs of seed.

Squirrel Buster Plus

Squirrel Buster Plus

Squirrel Buster 100% Squirrel Proof!

The Squirrel Buster Classic is a value-priced, high quality bird feeder that is guaranteed 100% squirrel proof. It provides both a perching and clinging environment, disassembles easily for cleaning and features seed tube ventilation to keep seed fresher.

Birdwatchers will Enjoy Viewing Unique and Entertaining Behaviors.

Sizes from 1.4 quart to 3 quarts capacity.

Squirrel Be Gone III Bird Feeder

Squirrel Be Gone III Bird Feeder

At first glance, the Squirrel Be Gone looks like a beautifully designed feeder. But look more closely and you’ll soon discover that this very design is what causes the feeder to be completely squirrel-proof.

The interior seed tower is surrounded by rustic metalwork. Six feeding ports have sturdy metal perches that allow birds to feed comfortably; but, when the squirrels perch on them, their weight causes the entire metal casing to slip down, completely blocking the feeding ports and their access to the seed.

In addition, this feeder is easy to clean.

My contact at Southern States suggested putting
Corn On The Cob
somewhere on the main path squirrels use to get to your bird feeder will have them so happily distracted, they will not feel the need to head in for birdseed.

I think I might get one of these for my lake property – but probably not until AFTER my mother’s visit! Might help keeping fishing trespassers away though…

For Fountain-Lovers

by on Mar.09, 2011, under Favorites

I have a fountain on the lake portion of my property. This was purchased mainly to help aerate the pond – which it has done, but it has also become a point of interest to visitors. Maybe those blue neon lights at night, highlighting the fountain may have something to do with it.

Although my home is not by any measure a “grand estate,” I think it might be time to look at another fountain – this time, land-based. I’ve found an online seller of fountains and all things neat for the garden so will be looking there to make this important purchase.

For smaller, less elaborate properties, a smaller but no less beautiful fountain may be just right. Here’s a good example:

This Torino Fountain will add a touch of elegance to my rustic property and at 9 inches tall and 16 inches in diameter, will suit my very narrow drive and entry area quite well.

The Olivia Jar Fountain, at 56 inches in height and 42 inches in diameter, may be a better selection for large properties or for those with an established property “entrance” that could use a little enhancement.

Shop additional Home & Garden Fountains…also home of the “Frog Blog,” and some other very unique garden fountain and statue products. I’m sure you will find something perfect for your outdoor living space.

Design Tool – Outdoor Living Spaces

by on Mar.05, 2011, under Favorites, Images

While planning a paver stone design for my new backyard patio I stumbled upon a great tool from Eldorado Stone and Eldorado Outdoor.

Outdoor Kitchen
Photo

Click anywhere on their “gallery” links and you will have a pretty handy design tool at the ready. They show “before” and “after” views of some really nice outdoor kitchens – the main focus being upgrading with Eldorado Stone products. But, the design tool itself, with a short learning curve, might come in handy for anyone in design-stage of an outdoor living or kitchen area.

There goes a couple hours of my Saturday morning – but time planning is always time well spent.
