Review – Black & Decker Electric Lawn Mower

by admin on Oct.13, 2010, under Photos & Videos, Product of the Week

I really didn’t think there was too much to say about a lawn mower as far as a “review.” That is until I was doing my research before buying my new Black & Decker Electric mower. Apparently, there are a LOT of mower products on the market that don’t do the job – if you spend any time actually reading what people say about other lawn mower purchases – electric or not.

Not the case with this mower – or the 18″ model I had before.

I ordered the mower from Amazon. It arrived in a tidy little box.

Here are the specs again – straight from the label:

It took about 10 minutes to get it out of the box and assembled. I was doing a test-mow soon after.

As I mentioned in a prior post, I’d been using the 18″ version of this mower for about 7 years. I use one or two 100′ electric cords (as applicable,) and can manage to do the majority of my mowed yard area within this reach.

This Black & Decker 19″ mower is a little heavier than the 18″ and seems a little more sturdy. It has both a bag to catch leaves, etc., and a mulching component (used when the bag is not attached.) I have never been a big proponent of bags hanging off my lawn mower and this time will be no exception. Bags tend to throw a lot of debris in dry times of the year. My sinuses are bad enough without directing dry particles at my face.

It has been fairly dry lately in my area of North Carolina but I did still have a couple areas of thick grass that had been giving the old model a bit of trouble. The new mower cut this grass with minimal extra effort and without the need to hesitate to let the motor catch up with the task.

Another improvement on this new Black & Decker mower is the height adjustment process. The earlier model had a clip near the front right wheel which required you to nearly lift the unit up to catch a higher ridge to reset blade height. Not a massive problem, but when you’re cutting grass on a 95+ degree day, anything that makes the job easier is welcomed! The newer model has a “press and squeeze” sort of grip. You apply pressure – closer to knee-height on the unit, and the mower body moves itself (more or less), up or down.

I am looking forward to using this new Black & Decker Electric mower. Based on the one I just replaced, I fully expect to still be mowing with it in 2017.

Lord willing…
